SWELTRAC - Uniting London's Transport

Cycle SuperHighways

Cycle Superhighways will provide safe, fast, direct routes into central London from outer London. The first two routes will open on 19th July 2010, with ten more being introduced by 2015 as part of a rolling programme.

These new routes aim to improve cycling conditions for people who already commute by bike and to encourage those who don't. This will help cut congestion, relieve overcrowding on public transport and reduce emissions. SWELTRAC supports the development of these routes, but is also keen to ensure that attention is given to those existing cycle routes that will link to the Superhighways.

It is hoped that the Cycle Superhighways project will bring about a London cycling revolution. Transport for London and the Mayor aim to increase cycling in London by 400% by 2025 (compared to 2000 levels).

As part of the Cycling Superhighways campaign, Transport for London has launched several initiatives to encourage and assist staff to start cycling on the routes.

 By registering for the cycling support scheme, organisations will be able to take advantage of the following products and services;

  • Cycle parking
  • Cycle training
  • Cycle maintenance sessions

 In order to be eligible for the cycling support, every organisation must have;

  • More than 50 employees on one site
  • Be located within 1.5km of routes 3 and 7
  • Not have a planning requirement to develop either a workplace travel plan or provide cycle facilities since April 2008.
