RECENT Projects

SWELTRAC has ceased to operate as of 31st March 2011. In the past, we worked with our partner Boroughs to implement a range of schemes across the sub-region where it provided geographically or strategically sensible to do so. These covered all transport modes, but certain projects particularly lent themselves to this approach. These are some of the projects that SWELTRAC was working on in the last couple of years of its existence.

Station Access Schemes

SWELTRAC liaised with our partner Boroughs to identify and prioritise those railway stations across the sub-region that could best benefit from a station access scheme under Transport for London's Major Schemes programme. Such projects aimed to encourage greater use of rail services by improving interchange with other transport modes (such as bus stops and cycle parking), reducing the risk of crime around the station and upgrading pedestrian access from both commercial and residential destinations.

Some stations that have benefited from this programme in the past include:

Barnes Station

Significant footway, signing and lighting improvements and the provision of new cycle parking. This project was due to be completed in April 2011 with further measures proposed to improve pedestrian safety on Rocks Lane and interchange with local bus services.

Barnes1

Phase 1 improvements at Barnes Station

Hampton Wick Station

This scheme saw improvements to pedestrian facilities at a number of nearby road junctions. Other benefits had been the provision of new street furniture, and a facility for the placement of a village Christmas tree with an accompanying electric supply for the lights!

Further improvements are to be made to the forecourt of the station (as at March 2011), with better cycle parking and proposals for a new café bar facility for passengers and other passers-by.

Mitcham Eastfields Station

SWELTRAC were pleased to be able to support Merton Council in successfully lobbying for the provision of this new station at Mitcham Eastfields. We were also able to provide funding for measures to provide enhanced accessibility to the station from neighbouring areas.

Mitcham Junction Station

The first phase of work at Mitcham Junction was aimed at improving footways and signage to the station, particularly for access to the nearby Willow Lane Industrial area.

Work has now been completed on phase 2, which involved a significant scheme to improve accessibility to the station itself, including the provision of a new access ramp from the adjacent Carshalton Road.

Electric Vehicle Charging Points

EV-Bay

Electric Vehicle Charging Bay

As a key Mayoral priority, SWELTRAC were able to lead the way in the installation of electric vehicle charging points in a number of Boroughs across south and west London. We played a key role in the development of the Mayor's Electric Vehicle Delivery Plan and the ambitious targets for the roll-out of the supporting infrastructure up to 2015. For more details, see our Electric Vehicles page on this web site.

Travel Plans

SWELTRAC undertook a considerable amount of work with local businesses to help them in the preparation of workplace travel plans. Further details can be found on our Travel Plan pages.

Travel Plan Networks

In addition to working with individual businesses, SWELTRAC was extremely pro-active in setting up travel plan networks in places such as Teddington town centre and the Garratt Lane Business Park in Wandsworth. We also worked closely with ten local NHS Trusts to develop the South West NHS Travel Plan Network.

Walking and Cycling

Some walking and cycling schemes also cross Borough boundaries or have strategic importance in their locations. Recent SWELTRAC projects in these areas included improvements at the following locations:

River Crane

The River Crane meanders its way through three of our former SWELTRAC Boroughs – Richmond, Hounslow and Hillingdon. Led by officers in Hounslow, a scheme was developed to improve walking and cycling facilities along this popular leisure route.

Grand Union Canal

The towpath along the Grand Union Canal is a popular walking and cycling route, both for commuters and leisure users. Walking & cycling improvements were accompanied by features such as new benches and landscaping.

Hans-Crescent-after

Hans Crescent Improvements

Hans Crescent

A much used pedestrian route in Kensington, this road is located next to Harrods and a busy entrance to Knightsbridge Underground station. Major improvements were made to the public realm at this location, including high quality landscaping and footway works, new street furniture and the creation of a shared surface.

Wandle Trail

SWELTRAC had a long standing interest in the Wandle Trail, running from Wandsworth down to Croydon, and sought to work closely with various partners to improve the footpaths and cycle routes serving this key green corridor through the sub-region.

Regeneration

Kimpton Strategic Industrial Area

This busy industrial and business estate is located between the local tip and recycling centre, a Tesco superstore, the A217 and a residential area. This scheme sought to ensure that delivery vehicles could avoid using residential streets and to improve pedestrian access and signage as well as providing new CCTV and lighting throughout the estate.

Sutton Council are planning further improvements to the access road to the A217, landscaping and the provision of a new linear park.

South London Estates

This scheme focussed on the Danebury Avenue estate in Roehampton, which is poorly served by public transport. Improvements to walking and cycling routes through the estate dovetailed nicely with the work to improve accessibility to Barnes Station, which serves the area.

Town Centres

Putney Town Centre

The aim of this major project was to create a reduction in street clutter, provide new street furniture, new paving, entry treatments, signing, new bus stops and a complementary signals upgrade via the Bus Priority programme.
