Previous Projects

Here are the details of a number of schemes that SWELTRAC had undertaken with its partner Boroughs and other organisations over recent years.

Station Access Schemes

Chessington South Station

This station serves a local secondary school, a nearby business estate and is the main rail access for Chessington World of Adventures. In conjunction with the Royal Borough of Kingston, steps were taken to improve footpaths on the approaches to the station, interchange with bus services and step free access to the platform.

Kew Gardens Station

The pedestrianisation of the plaza on the east side of the station has been a highly praised scheme and saw much needed improvements to this former cul-de-sac. New seating and lighting has been supplemented by tropical planters provided by Kew Gardens, giving a much improved feel to the aesthetics of the area.

Ladbroke Grove Station

This is one of the main public transport accesses to Portobello Road market. Improvements were made to overcome poor pedestrian access to the station and concerns over public safety and fear of crime. The scheme was developed in 2006/07 and implementation took place in 2007/08.

A main feature of this scheme involved improvements to the aesthetics and lighting to an adjacent railway bridge and to the Westway flyover.

Latimer Road Station

Significant improvements to the lighting for a pedestrian route under a nearby railway arch formed a major part of this project.

Mortlake Station

Footway and pedestrian crossing improvements were a major part of this scheme, which also saw the provision of new cycle parking facilities.

Norbiton Station

Even Reggie Perrin (in the original series) would have been impressed by the improved pedestrian access across the forecourt and car park of his local station. The scheme also consisted of better signposting to nearby Kingston Hospital.

Subsequently, SWELTRAC and South West Trains jointly funded the provision of a new disabled access ramp to the downside platform on the southern side of the station.

Twickenham Station

This was one of SWELTRAC's flagship schemes and one of our biggest station improvement projects to date, coming in at around £800,000 back in 2003.

This scheme provided improved mobility access through the upgraded parking facilities, a "Sonic" ticket window located in the station building and the provision of a new stair lift to the main platforms. Additional works included a new canopy, facade and electric sliding doors and repainting to the station platforms.

Twickenham Station

The station forecourt was refurbished to provide enhanced pedestrian movement around the station entrance, the installation of cycle parking facilities and the provision of a new pelican crossing. Bus stops were also moved so that they were closer to and easily accessible from the station. New signposting and information boards were installed, as well as a specially commissioned sculpture by a local artist based on nearby Eel Pie Island.

Wandsworth Common

Entry treatments and footpath and lighting improvements on the main routes to the station formed a significant part of this project. New sheltered cycle parking facilities were also provided.

Walking & Cycling

Mortlake Towpath

Mortlake 007

Flood-proofing on Mortlake Towpath

This popular walking and cycling route along the River Thames is prone to flooding at high tide. The provision of a raised stone footpath and drainage gulleys has helped to improve the use of the path at these times and significantly reduce the amount of time when it is not accessible due to water, mud and silt.

Freight

Hillingdon Freight Signage

SWELTRAC were able to assist in the provision of new signing for freight vehicles to support a ban on lorries entering a residential area in the London Borough of Hillingdon.
