Fresher roadshows @ Richmond

In September when students are back to school and teachers back to work we have been very busy in promoting sustainable forms of travel at many educational establishments. In conjunction with Smarter Travel Richmond upon Thames team we organised education roadshows at four colleges and universities in London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. On 10th September new students had their opportunities to find out about Oyster Cards and cycle facilities at Richmond American University. A week after Richmond Adult Community College staff and students as part of their travel plan launch had their bikes checked by Dr Bike and advised about other modes of travel. Further events also took place at Richmond upon Thames College and St. Mary's University College.

NHS and Borough Partnership Workshop

On Monday 2nd August NHS and Borough representatives gathered together at City Hall to discuss the engagement and partnership between NHS and local authorities.

In light of upcoming changes to the NHS service such as GP commissioning, various opportunities were highlighted such as a wider community approach in making the residents healthier as well as coordination of some transport services. Examples of best practice of working in partnership were identified such as in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, where a very close relationship between the NHS and the local authority has helped tackle both obesity and single occupancy car journeys.

On a sub-regional level we discussed opportunities arising from the well established South West NHS Travel Plan Group. Many suggestions were identified of how this group can help in improving the NHS/Borough partnership to deliver a better service and more travel choices to people who live, work or study in the borough. A summary of this discussion and proposed actions will be presented and discussed at the next network meeting on Thursday 26th August at Wimbledon HQ of NHS Sutton and Merton.

Handouts, with a summary of activities of regional London travel plan groups were distributed on the day. To download the South West summary, please click here.

SWELTRAC, Tearfund and NPL enjoying the awards night

June 2010

Smarter Travel Awards

The Smarter Travel Awards were held on Thursday 24th June 2010 at the London Transport Museum. The event was attended by over 250 people and was co-hosted by Transport for London's David Brown (Managing Director, Surface Transport) and Ben Plowden (Director, Better Routes and Places). The event was a good opportunity to reward smaller scale initiatives that have stood out because of their originality and effectiveness, and have made a real difference to the community. There were a total of 12 categories with SWELTRAC being short listed for Team of the Year, Tearfund short listed for Workplace of the Year and Lindsay Chapman from NPL short listed for the Champion of the Year award. Both the Team of the Year award and Champion of the Year award were peer voted awards. While we just missed out on the big prize we are extremely proud of our achievements over the past year as well as the hard work and effort put in by Tearfund and Lindsay Chapman to encourage sustainable transport use at their respective organisations

SWELTRAC would like to congratulate all the winners on the night. More information on the ceremony, nominees, application details and eventual winners can be found on awards website.
