The way to go – SWELTRAC and London Transport providing more information on public transport services to commuters and shoppers in Hounslow

13/07/1999

There can be no excuse for not using public transport to get to and from Hounslow town centre thanks to a recent initiative to improve signage and information by London Transport, SWELTRAC (South and West London Transport Conference) and Hounslow Council, who is an active member of the SWELTRAC partnership.

Hounslow is served by Hounslow Central (underground), Hounslow East (underground), Hounslow (mainline station) and a bus station. Although the stations are not a long walking distance away from the Town Centre, they are not immediately visible.

London Transport in partnership with SWELTRAC carried out a review of how to promote the use of public transport as a means of travelling to and from the town/shopping centre in Hounslow.

Out of the review has come about an attractive and innovative information centre and signage scheme - making access easy to shops and facilities in the town centre.

The information centre, based in the Treaty Shopping Centre, not only provides up to date London Transport information and tickets but information on all types of public transport and interchange in the area – taking the importance of public transport to the shoppers!

The pedestrian signage system provides 38 direction fingers, around the borough, to the three stations, the bus station, the town/shopping centre and the information centre.

The scheme forms part of a much wider transport initiative co-ordinated by SWELTRAC to encourage greater use of public transport in south and west London.

Celebrating another innovative project developed under the SWELTRAC partnership to encourage more people to sign up to a more environmentally friendly way of travelling, thereby reducing congestion in south and west London.
