New website giving instant access to transport information
October 1999
A new web site detailing initiatives to improve public transport in South West London – such as the rail/bus link from Feltham station to Heathrow terminals 1-4 has been launched by the South and West London Transport Conference (SWELTRAC).
SWELTRAC is a partnership of 11 local authorities, London Transport, bus and train operators, and Railtrack. The partnership's objectives are to:
Provide attractive alternatives to the car
Introduce traffic restraint measures to reduce car use and encourage environmentally friendly forms of transport
Provide for safe and efficient movement for people and goods.
Promote economic regeneration.
mprove public transport interchange facilities to allow easy transfer from one mode to another.
Since 1995 SWELTRAC has been developing proposals by the Rail Access Working Group and Integrated Transport Working Group to enhance movement in three key study 'corridors':
Heathrow/Stockley Park to Croydon,
Hammersmith to Sutton
Sutton to Kingston.
"Traffic congestion hinders economic growth and increases pollution," said John Barkley, Communications Director.
"SWELTRAC's objectives reflect national policies, and the website will be a useful way for people to find out what we are working on, and how they can do their bit by making use of services such as the Heathrow-Feltham railair and the new facilities at Kingston and Wimbledon station."
The new web site is at www.richmond.gov.uk/sweltrac.html with links to the partners and transport providers web sites where you can gain more information on the services they provide.
