SWELTRAC's Enforcement Initiative helps to keep buses and people moving
October 1999
For two weeks in November/December, ten boroughs in South and West London will be doing their bit to make bus journeys quicker and more reliable.
A special yellow line enforcement will be put in place during the two weeks at peak times. The purpose of this will be to prevent parking on yellow lines on bus routes. This enforcement initiative will apply from Croydon to Hillingdon, and from Wandsworth to Kingston.
The Boroughs will use their Parking Attendants selectively in ensuring the success of this initiative. Their targets will be the selfish motorists who stop on yellow lines for their newspaper or cigarettes without a thought for others who are held up on their journeys to work or elsewhere.
In welcoming the initiative, Operations Director of London General Bus Company, Robin Young based at Mitcham said "This is really good news for thousands of our passengers. Remember, buses carry 50 times as many people as the average car at peak times. Preventing illegal parking will help us to ease congestion and to speed up people's journeys".
"This yellow line enforcement initiative is a vital part of our quest to make public transport more reliable and attractive to users," said Bob Alker, Chairman of the SWELTRAC Steering Group. He added, "In this way, more people will be inclined to think about leaving their cars at home and hopping on a bus instead. Try it! You never know you might make a friend".
