'Metro' train service for South London

February 2000

A study to explore the possibility of developing a ‘metro’ style train service in South London, with frequent services running on the area’s extensive overground rail network is planned by a public and private sector partnership.

The aim is to provide a ‘turn up and go’ service where people can be sure to catch a train within a matter of minutes of arriving at the station. The study, will look at the practicality of providing six trains per hour in zones one to four, and four trains per hour in zones five and six.

The study will be funded by the Shadow Strategic Rail Authority, train operating companies (Connex, South West Trains and Thameslink), Railtrack, London Transport, the London Regional Passengers Committee and, SWELTRAC and SELTRAN (15 London Boroughs). The overall aim is to increase use of public transport by 50 per cent over the next ten years.

The three month study, which will look at innovative ways to address the growing transport needs of South London, will be carried out by MVA Consultants. The findings from the study will be reported to the Partnership in May 2000.

"This is really good news for commuters who may be more willing to think about leaving their cars at home if there is an improved public transport service," said John Barkley of the South and West London Transport Conference. "The study is a very good example of how partnerships between public and private bodies can work towards better transport for people in London."

SSRA Chief Executive Mike Grant said: "By working in partnership with all interested parties on this study we will be able to take a strategic approach towards meeting future transport needs. The development of a south London Metro service will give passengers access to a comprehensive rail network and an integrated transport system."
