Crossrail

Crossrail is the proposed new high frequency railway for London and the South East. From its planned completion in 2019 (with some sections opening in 2018), Crossrail will travel from Maidenhead and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east via new twin tunnels under central London. It will link Heathrow Airport, the West End, the City of London and Canary Wharf.

Preliminary works have commenced and are continuing during 2011. This is particularly noticeable in locations such as Tottenham Court Road, where a new flagship station is already under construction.

SWELTRAC had followed the progress of this project for many years, and offered our support to this important new east-west rail link. We believed it will have a significant impact in improving overcrowding on routes such as the Central, District and Piccadilly lines, thus improving the journey of many commuters travelling into central London from south west London Boroughs.

SWELTRAC supported the proposals for Crossrail 2 (the Chelsea-Hackney line), which would offer further benefits for those travelling from south west London towards central and north east London. We offered support to the affected Boroughs regarding the route of such a new line and the relevant safeguarding that is required.
