ALL NEW Case studies from South West London

The following case studies are based on organisations that the SWELTRAC Travel Plan team have worked with. The companies are of various sizes but have all developed Workplace Travel Plans.

ABC Hire

ABC Hire is a party and catering hire business located within the Kimpton Park Industrial Estate in Sutton. ABC developed a workplace travel plan in order increase accessibility and travel options for staff. As part of the scheme, ABC benefited from various initiatives and merchandise including match funding for the installation of showers and free cycle rucksacks to enable staff members to cycle to work. Secure Byke Bins at BedzedBioRegional Development Group

BioRegional Development Group is an entrepreneurial charity which invents and delivers practical solutions for sustainability. BioRegional enlisted the help of SWELTRAC to enhance its existing sustainable travel plan, in order to help them remain a leader in their field. This has resulted in all car users switching to alternative modes. For more information click here

Clear Insurance Management Ltd

Since first developing their travel plan in 2008, Kingston insurance brokers Clear Insurance Ltd have benefited from a range of initiatives designed to improve the work-life balance among staff. Various measures were introduced including the installation of cycle racks and specialised cycle courses for those less confident staff members. These measures have not only resulted in an increased number of staff cycling to work but have also led to increased levels of fitness and health. For more information click here

Tom Brake on the folding pool bikeThe Constituency Office of Tom Brake MP

Tom Brake is the Liberal Democrat MP for Carshalton and Wallington. In order to reduce travel costs and encourage his three full-time and 40 volunteer Carshalton-based staff to use more sustainable transport options for commuting and business travel, Tom Brake enlisted the help of SWELTRAC. Since then Tom, his staff and volunteers have benefitted from detailed travel information and advice, cycling promotional materials and a match funded folding pool bike. London Wetland Centre

Sustainability is second nature to the WWT London Wetland Centre, which is why they decided to develop a workplace travel plan. With the help of the SWELTRAC Travel Plan Team, the Wetland Centre identified a series of initiatives to improve staff health and fitness while reducing the overall carbon footprint. National Measurement Office (NMO)

NMO, based in Richmond, launched its travel plan in June 2009. This was designed with specialist assistance from SWELTRAC and is supported through ongoing work with the Teddington Travel to Work Network. As part of the travel plan process, NMO has benefited from the installation of showers and cycle sheds. The travel plan also showed NMO's commitment to reducing the environmental impact of their activities by adopting more sustainable practises. For more information click here

Pinewood's new cycle parking facilitiesPinewood Group, Teddington Studios

Teddington Studios, part of The Pinewood Studios Group, joined the Teddington Travel to Work Network in summer 2009 and subsequently enlisted the help of SWELTRAC to develop a travel plan for the site. The Studios has implemented a number of measures to improve transport options including installation of a covered cycle parking facility, offering Smarter Driving lessons, distributing local area transport maps and signing up to the local car share scheme. St Paul's Church

St Paul's is the Anglican parish church of Kingston Hill. They see the need to take responsibility for their ecological footprint and therefore encourage church members and visitors to walk or cycle to church, use public transport or share cars. As part of their travel plan, St Paul's produced bespoke travel information leaflets for the church. For more information click here

Tearfund

Tearfund, a Christian Charity based in Richmond, first developed a travel plan back in 1998. Since then, regular travel surveys have taken place highlighting a positive modal shift away from single occupance vehicles. Staff see the organisation as very proactive in the promotion of sustainable transport options and, as a result of this, Tearfund was shortlisted for the Workplace of the Year award at the 2010 Smarter Travel Awards. URS Corporation

URS is a leading multidisciplinary design firm with its European Headquarters in Wimbledon. The company's travel plan, developed with help from SWELTRAC, was launched to staff in Jaunary 2010 and since then URS has installed additional cycle parking and lockers, developed a travel information website and signed up to the Barclay's Cycle Superhighways workplace package. West Middlesex University Hospital

West Middlesex initially developed a travel plan with help from SWELTRAC in 2008. Since then the hospital has been an active member of the South West London NHS Travel Plan Group, with Facilities Manager Terri Rolston as the Group Chair. The hospital's latest survey, which took place during spring 2010, showed a 23% reduction in single occupancy car drivers compared to the figure for 2008. For more information click here

Arcola Theatre

Arcola Theatre, an off-West end venue, based in the heart of Dalston, is one of the most respected arts venues in the UK and Secretariat for the Mayor's Green Theatre Programme. Their drive to support staff and production companies in making a shift to zero carbon forms of transport led them to enlist the help of the Enterprise 'A New Way to Work' scheme. Bateaux

Bateaux London, a premier Thames restaurant river cruise company, signed up to the Enterprise scheme in order to help in achieving its Green Tourism for London strategy goals. Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD)

CAFOD's key values include a commitment to sustainability, so when a carbon audit uncovered that 5% of the organisations carbon footprint could be attributed to the commuting habits of its 250 staff, they got in touch with Enterprise. In this case study Facilities Manager Quentin Padgett talks about how through Enterprise, CAFOD has achieved, reduced carbon emissions, reduced car parking pressure, enhanced environmental credentials, and increased the number of staff walking and cycling to work. Chequers Cleaning Company

Chequers are a family run cleaning contract services business established in 1987. With both ISO 9001 and 14001 accreditation, and a South London Business Best Business for Sustainability award under their belt, Chequers has a strong commitment to responsible business practices and green initiatives. When car parking demand started to exceed capacity on a daily basis at their Croydon site, Director Kate Ward saw an opportunity to promote more sustainable travel options via a workplace travel plan, and contacted Enterprise to help. Forster

Forster is an ethical marketing, design and PR company based in Southwark, and was recently named Britain's greenest business for 2009 by The Sunday Times. Journey Latin America (JLA)

With sustainability at the top of today's agenda, it is important for businesses such as specialist travel company Journey Latin America (JLA) to emphasise their green credentials. Lion TV

Based in Hammersmith and Fulham, Lion TV was founded in 1997 and is one of the UK's most successful independent production companies. With a strong commitment to responsible business practices and the green agenda, Lion TV has been working with Enterprise 'A New Way to Work', to contribute to their environmentally friendly office ethos. Methodist International Centre (MIC)

The MIC is an AA 4-star hotel and conference centre based in central London. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) values have always been high on MIC's agenda, and they wanted to be seen as a proactive leader in the hospitality industry. Park Inn – Heathrow

With the help of Enterprise, Park Inn, a 4 star hotel located minutes away from Heathrow, has successfully encouraged a 10% reduction in car use amongst its staff, helping contribute to a greener local environment while improving the health and wellbeing of employees. Roundhouse Theatre

The Roundhouse in Camden is well known for pushing boundaries in the arts world, and now they are looking to be at the forefront of environmental sustainability with a unique travel plan aimed at providing green commuting options for staff, as well as encouraging a happy, healthy workplace. Taking advantage of the free travel planning service offered by Enterprise, the Roundhouse introduced a new sustainable commuting initiative for their staff members, with a large focus on cycle travel.
